you get what you pay for in gear like that. Pearl Izumi makes great bike shorts, but they are awesome, sturdy and comfortable. If you are gonig to ride alot, get serious about your shorts. It will be money well spent.

The issue of Bicycling magazines that's on the newsstands right now has an article all about how to dress for the cold. I just saw it at the airport last night.
keep hands and feet warm
the rest is kind of weird
if you go fast, feet and hands get colder but core gets warmer and you sweat
if you go slow, everything just freezes
so go fast and wear a jacket that zips or snaps
legs usually aren;t an issue
what you CAN'T do is wear just enough to stay warm when riding hard, then stop to change a flat tire for 10 minutes
you will freeze solid

There are leather gaiters or chaps that can be worn to help protect against snake bites – but they are expensive. The best protection is to be observant and vigilant – pit vipers (moccasin, rattlers) won't strike unless provoked or cornered.
Equipment suggestions:
water bottles/camel bak water carrier
spare tubes
air pump
bike tool
LED headlamp (large enough to fit on your helmet), or
minimag LED flash light and a heavy rubberband (to anchor them to the handlebars)
spare batteries
cell phone (for emergencies (you may have to walk (crawl) out from under the power lines to get a signal)
first aid kit (bandages, dressings, antibiotic ointment)
Clothing suggestions:
-base layers should be the fast drying materials like supplex, coolmax, etc… can even be found at low end chains like wal-mart, target, meijer.
-a jacket of some water resistant/proof material is a good idea but if you want it to be breathable (so you don't sweat to death) it will be more expensive. I like the Columbia brand of jackets made with omnitech material (almost as good as gortex). I haven't tried the campmor line of rain gear but the cost looks good http://www.campmor.com
-shorts/pants should be of fast drying material omnidry, supplex, etc..
